Blog post #8: Overall Reflection

Goals

I have attain some goals I had set at the beginning of the internship, now I know more English word than before, I learned some little thing about English culture and now I understand better when someone speaks to me in English. The strategy that I used, helped me to achieve my goals.

Strategies

The learning strategies that I had used are repetition, practises, analyses speech and talking to myself. The strategies that most worked for me is analyses speech and talking to myself. I abandon repetition and practises strategies because I did not always have the time to repeat the word that I would learn, and the only time I have to practice my English, it was during the internship. I will continue to use those strategies in the life of every day, for example when someone will talk to me in English ,I will analyses her speech and i will talk to myself and carrying on imaginary dialogues for practises the language.

Language

My English level is improved because I understood more than before when a person speaks to me in English. What has been the most difficult for me, is when I want express something because I could never find the word to express myself in English and I also had the difficulty with the pronunciation of some words. I don’t really find anything easy during my internship because everything was in English.

Growth

I learned that I could understand English and speak English with a lot of practice. I learned that I had more difficulty writing and speaking in English but the comprehension is more easier for me. Now, I understand more English culture, my perception of English culture does not change, but i have learn some interesting fact about English culture. Now, I have a better knowledge of English culture and the culture difference between English and French.

The internship

Now I better understand English, thanks to this experience, I would like to start this experience again but next time I think a going to plan better my time.

Gratitude

I gave a card to thank my host all of her time she give me for doing my internship and I also thank him for everything she learn me.

The placement

I recommend this internship placement to an another student because the people of Tyndale St-Georges community are very friendly and nice. The student will learn new words and expressions in English. The Tyndale St-Georges centre is close to a subway and it’s easy to find the center.

Blog post #7: Practice makes perfect

Formal conversation whit me and Judith.
When I go to my internship I always ask Judith what is the program for today.
Isa: Hellos Judith how are you?
Judith: Fine thank you and you?
Isa: I am fine, what is the program for today.
Judith: for today we will sort the skirts by color, sort the new clothing that we received and we will move the boots.
Isa: We have a busy day!
Judith: Yes, firstly we will start to sort the new clothing that we received.
Isa: ok
This text is formal because it has politeness words and the vocabulary is not bad. Example: fine tank you and you?

Informal text with me and Soumsoun.

Soumsoun: I come from Bengali.

Blog post #6: Breaking it down

Listening Comprehension
Now, it is easier for me to understand the people with whom I work. Before, I did not understand most of the words that people told me. Talking in English with people, familiarise me with some words, so when I speak English I understand more thing than before. The strategy I use to make sure that I understand the instructions is analyse the speech, I analyse what I and other people said in the L2. . When someone speaks, I am attentive to every word he said to understand her.

Accent
My accent in English has changed a little during my internship. I can pronounce some words very well and others not. There are some words and expression that are easier to say for me. Example interesting, scary, confusing, nervous and l've been running for tree miles. I had some misunderstandings based on pronunciation because some time a work with a lady who has a Indian accent and when she speaks in English I do not understand very well but I try to understand .the words that I still struggle with is laugh ,mood ,cooing ,rough and etc. I noticed different positions in my mouth with the (th) when I speak English, I place tip of tongue behind the top of the teeth, I breathe out ,retract the tongue and after I have a vibrate air behind tongue.

Fluency
I became more comfortable to speak in English with some people, for me, the easiest topic for talking in English are clothes, the accessories, food and talk about people. The subjects who still cause me hesitation are when people speak about science and astrology. The strategies I have used to become more fluent is don't mind make mistakes when I talk. example, before I did not speak in English because I had doing too many mistakes but now I'm not afraid to make mistakes because I know people will correct me and I will learn from my mistakes.

Humour
Sometimes, when I translate a English joke to a French joke they don’t have the same sense and then I don’t understand the joke.
 Accuracy
Sometimes I try to speak in English with more accurately. When I speak I Remember to pronounce the ’s’ after plural nouns and the third person simple present but some time, I forget to say the regular ‘ed’ after regular past tense verbs. the observation that I made about language structures is: I have to put the adjective before I put the nouns, The present continuous is formed by using the auxiliary "BE" in the present simple monitoring of the present participle (verb form in 'ING') is An action taking place now (at the moment of speaking)and etc.

blog post 5:cultural encunters

the only cultural observation I seen are Christmas decorations, there have some garland, box of gifts, fake snow and a Christmas tree. There were Adverts for the feast of Christmas. During my internship there's Christmas music playing. Peoples of Tyndale St-Georges community listen mainly to classical music. There are often newspapers lying around on the table because there are many people who read the newspaper like the gazelle. The day of Thanksgiving and Christmas is more significant than Saint-Jean. The person who celebrates Christmas will have midnight mass; they open their gift to 24 midnights and eat turkey. Christmas, for them, significant the birth of Jesus, for the majority of people. I have been exposed to the Spanish culture because when I was in the room use, I heard some people talking Spanish to each other. The aspect of my internship was the hardest for me is when I can’t find the words to speak English. The best part of my internship was when I decorate the clothing store for Christmas. Balloon, floor, cash register trolley and shop front are the word I heard when I was during my internship. I think a going to use those words in my work.

blog post 4:The woril is you classroom

the difference that I have the most out between English and French is the pronunciation of words, for example there is a higher grade suction when you speaking in English contrary to French. In my opinion, it’s easier to learn English in an internship opposed to a classroom because when you are on a place or everyone or almost everyone speaks English, we have no choice to speak English for the world can understand you. In the classroom the majority of people speak French to be better understood, sometimes in English class, there are many people who will speak in French. It is possible to learn English without being in a traditional structured class room because when you talking to people around you, who have been to school in English and who have been educated in English, is therefore unlikely that the person speaks well an English and have a good structure.  when I corrected my mistake its  helps me remember the good word that I have said wrong or when I repeated in my head the sentence that my host told me ,I analyses that, it helps me remember how to  begin a sentence. There is some difficulty I encounter in my internship when I did not know a word in English I told in French but then my host told me the word in English. Low-rise, garland, tinsel, paper be and shot front are the word I heard when I was during my internship. When I was decorated the store for Christmas, my host tell me those words. For the future it will help me to know better about Christmas decoration.

blog post 3 :Diving in !

The majority of the interactions I had in English was with my host. I had some interactions with customers and with people who work as volunteer. Me and my host we speak mainly of clothing, how to place them in the store and trier. We talk frequently to the life of every day when there is nobody in the store and when there are customers on their I try to find some clothing that should be interesting for her. When I do not understand some words, my host communicates to me sometimes with body language, for example when I not sure, for I am understood my host repeated the sentence and adding body language. The phrase I heard was new to me because I never use expression in English. The interaction with my host and some customer makes me more familiar with the English language. people in the community Tyndale St-Georges use first names, so when they want to call a person or when they want to say hello to a person they use the first name of the people  .the Tyndale St-Georges community mainly drink tea and eat lots of  snacks. When it is time to take a break, the break are long and sometimes it happens that my host is late. Bath towel, underwear, sheet bra and knickers are the word I heard when i was during my internship when my host asked me to place something on the store. In French underwear mean souvettement, bath towel mean grande serviette, sheet mean drap, knickers mean slip pour femme and bra mean soutiengorge. For the future, it will help me to know better my clothing in English.
